Well I’m a wanted man
Ridin’ the rails to nowhere
Doing my best to stay out of other people’s way

Louisville, Kentucky, headed on down to Amarillo
Got to get there fast, I can’t waste another day

Got a letter from my girl, she said she was leavin’
She needs a man who isn’t always on the run
That lawman’s been closing in and if he finds me
They’ll lock me a way and I’ll never again see the sun

So, come on engineer, let’s get this train a’ rollin’
Get it on down the track before my baby is gone.
I want to hold her in my arms one more time
Before that lawman puts my shackles on

Lord knows I shot that man down in self defense
But all his friends in that bar tell a different tale
Nobody in this whole wide world believes me
Except for my pretty little southern belle

Get on the ground were the words I heard from behind me
As I turned the bullet ripped through my chest

I fell to the ground my legs weak beneath me
I looked up to heaven and made my last request
