In the City

We grew up together
School sweethearts in a small town
Married by the time we were out of college
Our love never let us down

We moved to the city
Just to follow our careers
But the city’s rush got the best of us
After four or five years

I’m just a simple boy
Never could adjust to the crowds
She loves living in the city
But I’m back on the farm now

My heart breaks everyday
That she lives away
In the city

Well my daddy and my granddaddy
Farmed this piece of land
As far back as I can remember
Its been in our family’s hands

So I keep the tradition
Drive this tractor every day
Wishing I could be with you
But I know there’s just no way

Cause your in the city
Catching cabs and making deals
I’m looking at fresh plowed dirt
Holding on to a steering wheel

The marriage was final
Six months ago today
It hurt me to sign the papers
How can I just throw my love away

How many other lives
Has this city swallowed whole
The city shows no mercy
It’ll take your heart and your soul

It’ll leave you feeling empty
Just like it has me
It’ll take away your love for your fellow man
And destroy your humanity
