Daddy stood over six feet tall
A good man, a friend to all
He never met a man he didn’t like
Worked hard all his life
Always treated my momma right
And kept food on the table for all his kids
Rough and ragged around the edge
When I was young I made a pledge
To leave that little town and never look back
I moved away and did my thing
Met a few girls and had some flings
Finally settled down and raised a family
But daddy got sick late last spring
The doctors said they couldn’t do a thing
I went back and we had a good long talk
“Son, you were such a hoot”
You used to put on my old cowboy boots
And do your best to walk around the room
You grew up to be your father’s son
You thought you were the only one
That mattered in this big ol’ hard world
That’s the way I used to be
Until I raised my own family
And found the love a father has for a son
I’ve made mistakes in my life
But with the help of a loving wife
I found my family was the most important thing
Son, I hope you’ll listen to me
Love your wife and your family
Follow my lead and walk in my boots
As I held onto his hand
He slipped into the promised land
I hung my head and I began to cry
He loved me enough to let me go
He loved me with a love that I now know
And now I’m living like him and walking in his boots
Walking in my daddy's boots
Taking the steps that he took
Going places he went to
Doing things he used to do
I look up to the Father and the Son
I realize I’m not the only one
Lord help be the man my daddy was
Now when my little boy looks up at me
Its an honor when he calls me daddy
I hope someday he’ll walk in the same boots
Fly to the sky and never look down
I hope in your life love will abound
And someday I hope you’ll walk in your granddad’s boots.
Walking in my daddy's boots
Taking the steps that he took
Going places he went to
Doing things he used to do
I’m trying real hard
To walk in my daddy’s old boots
